Meta Releases Muse App for Mac to Control Desktop Files

Meta has expanded the reach of its new AI assistant, Muse, by launching a dedicated application for Mac users. This desktop expansion allows the AI agent to interact directly with a user's local files, messages, calendar, notes, and mail within their native macOS applications. To address privacy concerns, Meta has designed the system on an opt-in basis, meaning users retain control over what the assistant can access, and the app requires explicit approval before executing any sensitive actions.

The Mac release follows the initial rollout of Muse on mobile and web platforms earlier this month, where the assistant quickly claimed the top spot on the U.S. App Store charts. The rapid deployment of the desktop version highlights the intense competition in the consumer-facing AI agent sector. Meta chief executive Mark Zuckerberg emphasized this momentum on social media, noting that "the team is shipping fast" to keep pace with rivals.

This launch comes amid a broader industry shift toward agentic AI, which is beginning to disrupt traditional software-as-a-service models and mobile hardware ecosystems. Muse is competing in a crowded field that includes major players like OpenAI and Anthropic, as well as specialized startups. For instance, the text-based AI agent Poke was acquired by Cognition in July, while another rival assistant, Instinct, is reportedly raising capital at a $10 billion valuation. Both Muse and Instinct introduced voice calling features this week to capture consumer interest.

For developers and practitioners, the arrival of Muse on macOS signals a shift from passive chat interfaces to active, system-level automation. Instead of manually copying data between applications, users can now rely on the agent to coordinate tasks across native productivity tools. As these agents gain deeper operating system integration, developers will need to design software that is easily navigable not just by human users, but also by autonomous AI intermediaries.
